HVO GM SPEAKS AT FIRST HUNTER BUSINESS ENERGY & RESOURCES EVENT IN 2024
21 February 2024Hunter Valley Operation’s General Manager Dave Foster is the keynote speaker at the first Hunter Business Energy and Resources event for 2024.
Dave will be speaking about how HVO’s Continuation Project will unearth opportunity while the world and the Hunter region transitions to a lower carbon economy.
His presentation will focus on:
- an overview of the proposal and its significant benefits
- an update on progress with seeking approval
- changes made to incorporate community and government feedback and minimise impacts
- insights into the keys to success for operating large mines and project approvals in a fast-changing regulatory environment with changing community attitudes.
Dave said HVO’s Continuation Project will support local jobs, the local economy and community by extending the life of the open cut coal mine up to 2050. He said continuing mining at HVO will deliver a benefit of more than $4 billion in net present value terms.
“With a workforce of up to 1,500, more than 750 suppliers HVO is one of the region’s largest mines,” Dave said.
We make a significant contribution to the local community and the regional and NSW economy. Our direct economic contribution in 2022 was almost $1.5 billion.”
“Our continuation is in line with the NSW Government’s Strategic Statement on Coal Exploration and Mining in NSW and Hunter Regional Plan 2041, which recognise that coal production continues to be important to NSW and its regional communities as we transition to a low carbon economy.”
“Our proposal delivers in-demand, high quality, coal with relatively little additional disturbance to remnant vegetation or other impacts compared to other projects of a similar scale. This coal will contribute to the energy security of some of Australia’s important trading partners, particularly Japan.”
Dave has been overseeing HVO since January 2023. A Hunter local, he started his mining career at HVO as a Mine Operations Engineer almost two decades ago. He advanced to the role of Production Superintendent and then went on to work at Glencore’s Liddell and Bulga coal mines.
