HVO VACATION PROGRAM OFFERS MINING STUDENT AWARD-WINNING EXPERIENCE
03 October 2023UNSW mining engineering student Liam Brunton has won the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) Third Year Mining Student Award 2023, through his report on his work experience at HVO.
When Liam enrolled in his Summer vacation program he had no idea how valuable and rewarding his time at HVO might be.
Liam said his experience at HVO was truly an eye-opening snapshot into how the mining industry works.
He said his time at HVO offered the most valuable learnings he’s had to date.
“My first key learning at HVO was that of the industry’s serious commitment to safety,” he said.
“I had a series of projects which I undertook throughout the program. Getting to use real-time technology and analysis tools and working with HVO stakeholders and consultancy firms to make HVO’s operations safer was a great experience.”
“I am passionate about the Australian resources industry and am incredibly eager to graduate and begin my career in the sector. I am excited to enter an industry that is changing and evolving to accommodate for the economies of the future.”
The HVO work experience program is part of Glencore Coal Assets Australia’s (GCAA) Summer Vacation Program. The program offers students like Liam on-the-job training to add to their education.
HR Manager Amy Hartmann said the program benefits the students because they get to work with different teams and operational units across the mine.
“We provide a wide range of activities for students to experience. We loved having Liam on site and it’s great to see he was rewarded for his hard work,” Amy said.
“Our students get to see what we offer our staff at HVO and live the HVO values of Think Sharp, Dig in and Care,” she said.
“The experience offers a huge chance to unearth opportunity to see how a running operation like HVO works, and all the moving parts that go into making a safe and enjoyable workplace.”
As well as work experience programs, HVO also offers apprenticeships and cadetships.
